Personal Statement

I have recently moved to Nelson from my hometown of Wellington. Both of my parents are former refugees from Cambodia. Growing up as a Cambodian-Kiwi with such a background has really affected the way I see the law. It has shown me how important the law is for people who have not always been dealt the best hand in life. I grew up watching my father advocate for the rights of refugees through his work with various refugee community organisations. This inspired me to pursue a career in the law and to learn how it can empower communities from all walks of life.

I finished my studies at Victoria University of Wellington in 2021. My majors were Law, Management and International Business. During my studies and over the summer breaks, I worked for the Privacy and Official Information team at Oranga Tamariki. I also volunteered for the Human Rights branch of the Community Justice Project for two years. I was an intern at Community Law Porirua for the first half of 2021 and I really loved being able to use my skills to give back to the community.

I was a law clerk at Zindels last summer. I am excited to return to Nelson and continue learning at a community-focused law firm whilst I complete my Professionals. I am a firm believer in the idea that everyone has the right to quality legal representation. I am proud to be working for a firm so committed to providing legal aid. I also want people, from any background, to know that I will listen, be empathetic and understanding when listening to what they have been going through. I look forward to working with the many communities in Nelson.

I am excited to be working at Zindels again and I will be assisting my colleagues in several legal practice areas such as criminal, family, civil and employment law
