My email address is: firstname.lastname@example.org
I grew up in Invercargill and have lived in Dunedin, Wellington and Helsinki before settling here in Nelson in 2017. My southern accent remains.
I graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts with Honours (First Class) in English. After graduation I worked for what was then the Ministry of Economic Development in Wellington for 2 years as a policy analyst, where my main project was the drafting and implementation of the Financial Service Providers (Dispute Resolution) Act. During that time, I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Public Policy at the Victoria University.
I began working in late 2009 for a law firm in Invercargill. I was admitted to the bar in April 2010, and had my first court appearance in the district court criminal list later that same day. I got “the bug” from that point on, and have continued to practice in the areas of Criminal and Family law.
My clients are often in stressful or vulnerable situations and they deserve practical, accurate and considered advice tailored to their needs. I aim to have my clients in a position where they know what all the options are available to them, and what the realistic prospects are, so that they can consider the best way forward for themselves and their families. My clients can trust me to be honest and upfront with them.
I work hard to reach a mediated outcome where appropriate, but when litigation is required I am a confident and experienced court room advocate. I appear in the criminal and family list courts on a weekly basis, and I also have appeared in appeal cases to the High Court and Court of Appeal, along with regular defended hearings, judge-alone trials and jury trials.
Litigation was a natural progression for me as I have always enjoyed public speaking. I have an Associate Diploma in Speech and Drama from Trinity College London, and at university I competed around New Zealand and in Australia in mooting competitions.
I am an approved legal aid lead provider for criminal and family work. I am approved under legal aid to run jury trials up to a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, and I assist Steven Zindel in jury trials with more serious charges. I also accept private retainers.
Some areas I practice in:
- Criminal appeals
- Criminal list matters – e.g. assaults, driving, drugs, probation breaches
- Ministry prosecutions e.g. fisheries, primary industries, benefit fraud
- Limited licences
- Domestic Violence – applicants and respondents
- Relationship property
- Care of Children Act – parenting orders, guardianship
- Oranga Tamariki / Ministry for Vulnerable Children
I have two children who keep me entertained and grounded. I sing barbershop in a sextet and a women’s chorus, and I am a member of the Rutherford Street Kindergarten governance board.
